With the release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, some fans have been speculating if Namor would get his own solo movie. However, it doesn’t look like that’s happening any time soon, according to a Marvel producer.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has released to some pretty high critical acclaim. The movie tells the story of the aftermath of King T’Challa’s death, which has left Queen Ramonda, Shuri, M’Baku, Okoye, and the Dora Milaje trying to safeguard their nation. The main villain introduced in the movie is a mutant named Namor.
It looks like there are some legal issues that could prevent Namor from getting a solo film.
In an interview with TheWrap, Marvel producer Nate Moore explained the legal barriers and more.
“It honestly affects us more, and not to talk too much out of school, but in how we market the film than it does how we use him in the film.
“There weren’t really things we couldn’t do from a character perspective for him, which is good because clearly, we took a ton of inspiration from the source material, but we also made some big changes to really anchor him in that world in a truth that publishing never really landed on, I would argue, in a big way.”
Back in the 1990s, Marvel had been facing a period of bankruptcy. In order to save themselves, they sold the rights to many characters to other movie studios and companies. That’s why Sony still produces Spider-Man movies and why the MCU has no Hulk films aside from The Incredible Hulk.
The rights to make a Namor movie lie in the hands of Universal. If Universal doesn’t greenlight the idea, it can’t happen.
So, will Namor never get his own solo movie? It’s not totally impossible, but for right now, it’s just unlikely.
