Justin Roiland, the co-creator, executive producer, and star of Rick and Morty was fired by Adult Swim amid felony domestic violence charges. Roiland appeared at a pre-trial hearing to face the charges a little over a week ago.
Hulu has also cut ties with him and Roiland resigned from Squanch Games.
Adult Swim confirmed that the show would continue without Roiland, but that it had “ended its association” with him.
Earlier this month, NBC News reported that Justin Roiland had been charged back in May 2020 with felony domestic violence for an incident involving an anonymous woman he was dating in Orange County, California.
Roiland pleaded not guilty to one felony count of domestic battery with corporal injury and one felony count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud and/or deceit.
He had a protective order filed against him in October 2020, prohibiting Roiland from harassing, threatening, surveilling, or going within 100 feet of the unnamed individual.
So far, it’s unknown how Adult Swim will recast the show. Roiland had voiced Rick and Morty and the show was given a renewal deal back in 2018 for 70 episodes–of which, less than half have aired.
Roiland has also been cut from Hulu’s animated series Solar Opposites, which he co-created, stars in, and produced. Justin Roiland was also cut from Koala Man, which he was an executive producer on as well as a voice actor.
20th Television Animation, the producer for both Solar Opposites and Koala Man, also ended its association with Justin Roiland. Both shows are still expected to continue without him as well.
Justin Roiland Also Resigned from Squanch Games
Squanch Games announced that Justin Roiland, a co-founder of the video game studio, has resigned. The studio confirmed the news through a tweeted statement. Roiland had submitted his resignation on January 16, four days after he was charged.
Squanch Games confirmed that the studio will continue without Roiland and that it would continue to support the release of High on Life. The news from Squanch Games came hours after Adult Swim cut ties with Roiland.
