James Bond's next actor will not be younger, producer confirms

James Bond producer Michael G. Wilson has confirmed that they are not looking for a younger actor to play 007 in the next film, since the character is a “veteran” and not “some kid out of high school.”

Although Wilson and the team has not yet found a successor for Daniel Craig, there seems to already be a set idea of what the next James Bond should be like.

During the London BFI event, Wilson explained briefly as to why the 007 casting criteria is requiring “a thirty-something” actor. Deadline first reported on the story.

“We’ve tried looking at younger people in the past,” Wilson said, “but trying to visualize it doesn’t work. Remember, Bond’s already a veteran. He’s had some experience. He’s a person who has been through the wars, so to speak. He’s probably been in the SAS or something. He isn’t some kid out of high school that you can bring in and start off. That’s why it works for a thirty-something.”

The youngest actor to portray James Bond is George Lazenby and was 29 when he filmed On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. The remainder of the Bond actors were in their thirties or forties, and it seems like this will be a consistent thing.

It also looks like the next James Bond needs to be in it for the long-run, as the contract stipulates that the actor must be committed to the franchise for at least a decade.

Producer Barbara Broccoli told The Hollywood Reporter that “we’re not just casting someone for one film. We’re casting someone, hopefully for a decade, at least. It’s a big decision to make, and we’re nowhere near making that decision.”

She added that “any actor that would be thinking about this has got to think about how it would change their life.”
