HBO Max Velma looks bad already

By mess, I mean it’s going to be a bad mess. It’s going to be terrible. I think you and I can both confirm that just by analyzing the trailer, but I’m speaking from experience here! I’ve been reviewing the latest cinematic masterpiece that is Marvel’s She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, so I think I know how to detect terrible TV from a mile away at this point. However, the new HBO Max Velma show looks downright stupid.

HBO Max released a teaser at what viewers can expect from its adult take on the classic Scooby Doo series. As an adult myself, I assume that I am the target demographic. However, I feel like I have been anything but the target demographic, because I have no idea who could possibly find humor presented to us in the teaser trailer to be remotely considered comedy.

I get it, Mindy Kaling is a big name in the world of Hollywood, but boy oh boy did I just have a meltdown trying to find something funny from that trailer. Basically, new TV shows that know they suck have been doing this thing where they attempt to subtly call out the “haterz” by well…not so subtly calling them out.

What I am referring to is how Velma basically just says a bunch of talking points people usually make when they’re annoyed at changes made to TV shows and movie characters. Basically, a super cringe moment in the trailer. It’s not funny because it’s just too obvious. There’s no humor in being lectured, to be honest.

Additionally, the show is supposedly going to be a more adult-take on Scooby Doo, so that means gore and nudity. That’s pretty much the marketing angle for this show. Gore and nudity. Okay…but what’s the actual story? ‘Cause there’s no Scooby Doo in a Scooby Doo show, so…what gives?

The animation also angers me, and I’m not sure why. It’s just bad.

It just seems like a self-insert. There are plenty of these entertainment pieces where you can pretty much tell that the writer just made the character their personality, and it’s painfully annoying. The main character almost has no flaws, or if they do, the flaws are pretty negligible. These self-insert characters are not entertaining because the writer can’t call themselves out, so it’s a lose-lose situation in entertainment.

Look, I’m not saying that you can’t enjoy things I don’t like…but I’m also saying that. You’re not allowed to enjoy shows that I don’t enjoy because I said so.

I’m just kidding around. Folks, seriously, watch what you like, but I just have a feeling that Velma is going to be a flop just from that teaser alone. Plus, I also know that when I watched it, it had 1.1 million views on YouTube and a measly 21K likes. I can only imagine that there were dislikes in the hundreds of thousands.

That’s not a good start, I’d assume.
