Gladiator 2 is finally happening and will star Paul Mescal as the lead role, according to a report by Deadline. Ridley Scott is also set to return to the helm, 23 years after the original Gladiator released in 2000. Gladiator was a massive blockbuster hit and won five awards at the Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Russel Crowe.
Gladiator 2 is set to star Paul Mescal as the lead role. Mescal is known best for his role in the Hulu limited series Normal People. He also starred in the 2022 critically acclaimed film Aftersun, which is currently up for potentially winning awards.
Mescal is also popular across social media and is widely recognizable. Gladiator 2 will be his first leading role in a major studio production.
The first Gladiator film followed the life of Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russel Crowe) who’s father is killed by Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix). Commodus takes the throne and orders the murder of Maximus and his family. Maximus escapes, but is later forced into the life of being a gladiator. The story mostly follows the revenge Maximus seeks against Commodus.
Not much is known about Gladiator 2 as of right now, but it is known that Mescal will play Lucius, the son of Lucilla and Commodus in the first movie. Lucius had been a little boy in the first Gladiator. Years after the victory of Maximus guaranteed the safety of Lucius and Lucilla, he must face his own challenges now.
The Paramount project will be Ridley Scott’s next film after his upcoming Napoleon, which will see Joaquin Phoenix as well.
Ridley Scott is known for his works on movies like Blade Runner and other major hits.
