Baz Luhrmann’s newest biopic Elvis has made over 30 and a half million during its opening weekend according to the box office, tying it with fan-favorite Top Gun: Maverick.

It’s pretty rare to see a perfect tie with two films, however that’s exactly what viewers saw this weekend during the opening showing of Elvis, a biopic showcasing the rise to fame of the American social icon. The tie will not be revealing until Monday morning however, when the gross ticket sales are counted for Elvis.

The film stars Austin Butler as Elvis Presley, a cast decision many fans are praising. The film has other powerful actors in its team, including Tom Hanks and Olivia DeJonge.

As things stand most of Warner Bros’ demographic expectations have been correct. Just over half of the moviegoers were over 35, and 29 percent were over 55. 57% of the audience was female, and a huge portion of domestic sales came from the South (where Elvis saw a major portion of his fame).

Top Gun: Maverick has just recently passed the $1B mark, making it one of the years’ most formidable films. Compared to the average for most large-budget films of its kind, Maverick is doing incredibly well, seeing as it’s barely fallen in domestic sales.

It was also the second Hollywood pandemic-era film to make it past $500 million domestically, the first being Spider-Man: No Way Home, which earned an impressive $804.7M in North America alone.
