2022 saw the release of many games from across the multitude of video game genres. The Game Awards decided that Elden Ring was the most deserving of its award title. FromSoftware gave players a chance to explore Elden Ring, a soulsborne game that reached fans of all types of video games.
However, Elden Ring wasn’t just the most completed game of 2022, it was also the most quit.
Elden Ring, like other soulsborne games, is difficult. Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Elden Ring all share a common trait of having complicated and tough boss fights. Typically, soulsborne games have been mostly linear, with a slight semi-open world. Elden Ring brought forward a true open world, creating a very different player experience.
Its differentiation points made Elden Ring one of the best-selling games of 2022. It brought new players to the soulsborne genre. The open world has been cited as one of the reasons why many players decided to give Elden Ring a chance. It let players explore a world, avoid difficult zones, and complete the game in their own style.
As Kotaku pointed out, according to HowLongToBeat.com, Elden Ring is the most completed game of 2022. Nearly 6,000 users on the site reported that they played and beat Elden Ring. When you look at Elden Ring compared to some other major releases for 2022, Stray was completed by about 4,000 users. Pokemon Legends: Arceus was completed by 2,500 users.
Still, even with its impressive completion rate, Elden Ring was also quit the most out of any other game. About 261 users on HowLongToBeat.com reported quitting Elden Ring. Although the data set is small, it does point out a potential trend among most players who bought a copy of Elden Ring.
Elden Ring was one of the most hyped games of 2022 and was talked about endlessly on most gaming channels. A lot of people who didn’t anticipate the difficulty-level of a soulsborne game probably picked up the title and didn’t realize just how hard it would be to finish it.
It could also be that players just have other games they want to get through as well, forcing them to take breaks from something as massive as Elden Ring.
