Electronic Arts (EA) has patented a feature that could basically ban players for teaming up with their enemies. Although it’s not really a common thing that happens, it is possible for players in multiplayer competitive games to basically collude with enemies. And now it looks like EA wants to put a full-stop to this.
EA has patented many features to try and reduce or eliminate instances of cheating in online games like Battlefield and Apex Legends. Cheating in online games is unfortunately a fairly prevalent occurrence. Most studios and publishers have anticheat systems in place to combat this. Sometimes though, cheating does get past these systems.
EA has proposed a new system that would automatically detect if players on opposing teams are collaborating to try and get an advantage over other players. Basically, EA would have to analyze players’ social connections and in-game relationships by using an algorithm. This algorithm would look over in-game history and decide if players are engaging in such collusion.
It looks like the system is being designed specifically for Battlefield and Apex Legends, but it may come to other multiplayer titles in the future.
Earlier this year, the company submitted a patent for input delay improvements, so it looks like EA is trying to get improvements across the board for their games. However, alongside the intensive anticheat and the new collusion detection algorithm, EA seems to be hitting hard at player security. For some, this is probably controversial. Apex Legends’ current anticheat is already controversial.
Still, online games are seldom free from cheating and other exploits, which can really ruin player experience. It only makes sense that EA is looking to improve the player experience.
Apex Legends is likely going to be getting an update to its anticheat as well in the near future, so we have yet to see what these new systems will bring. We also have yet to see how aggressive EA’s measures to ban players that are teaming up with enemies will be.
