Disney is known by many to bring happiness and magic to the world of film. Its animated movies have become staples of children and family movie nights, with classics like Sleeping Beauty and newer tales like Big Hero Six. However, Disney’s latest movie, Strange World, hasn’t been its best performer. In fact, Strange World is now one of the lowest rated Disney movies ever.
According to CinemaScore, Strange World has received a B. It’s the first time a Disney animated film got anything below an A- since 1991.
CinemaScore assigns its letter score based on responses to a six-question poll moviegoers are asked after watching the film. Beauty and the Beast was the first Disney animated film to get a score back in 1991 and got an A.
For the most part, all of Disney’s animated theatrical releases have gotten either an A or A- on the CinemaScore polls. This includes Lightyear, which received an A-.
However, Strange World has gotten a B. And it looks like CinemaScore isn’t the only place where Strange World is having a tough time performing. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 73, but audiences gave it a 59. Additionally, it’s brought in a lot less than projected and it’s been a loss for Disney so far.
The movie had a budget of around $120-130 million, but it’s only brought in $11.2 million between Wednesday and Friday. It was projected to make $30 million in its 5-day opening, but it missed that mark.
Strange World is described as follows by Disney’s official website: “Walt Disney Animation Studios’ original action-packed adventure “Strange World” introduces a legendary family of explorers, the Clades, as they attempt to navigate an uncharted, treacherous land alongside a motley crew that includes a mischievous blob, a three-legged dog, and a slew of ravenous creatures.
“The voice cast includes Jake Gyllenhaal as Searcher Clade, a family man who finds himself out of his element on an unpredictable mission; Dennis Quaid as Searcher’s larger-than-life explorer father, Jaeger; Jaboukie Young-White as Searcher’s 16-year-old son, Ethan, who longs for adventure; Gabrielle Union as Meridian Clade, an accomplished pilot and Searcher’s partner in all things; and Lucy Liu as Callisto Mal, Avalonia’s fearless leader who spearheads the exploration into the strange world.
“Helmed by Don Hall (Oscar®-winning “Big Hero 6,” “Raya and the Last Dragon“) and co-director/writer Qui Nguyen (co-writer “Raya and the Last Dragon“) and produced by Roy Conli (Oscar®-winning “Big Hero 6,” “Tangled“), “Strange World” releases November 23, 2022.”
Strange World is set to lose over $100 million in its theatrical run, which is not standard at all of Disney’s releases. It’s likely that the movie just didn’t receive much hype or possibly the story didn’t interest many people.
