Cyberpunk 2077’s disastrous launch did not just impact Cyberpunk 2077, but also the reputation and the value of the publisher behind it — CD Projekt.
CD Projekt is the main publishing company, and under it comes video game studio CD Projekt Red. The Polish-based studio is responsible for popular titles like The Witcher, but also for Cyberpunk 2077. Since the release of Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt has seen a hit to its value by over 75%.
Business Insider Poland first reported on the news, stating that the hit taken from Cyberpunk 2077 costed the company billions, dropping its value from 40 billion Polish zloty to les than 10 billion Polish zloty. Translated to USD, that’s a drop from 8.45 billion to 2.1 billion.
This major drop in value has reverted the company back to its 2017 value. However, CD Projekt still remains one of the most profitable companies in Poland.
Since the launch of Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red has been focused on fixes and updates for the main issues that were mainly prevalent on console. An originally promised multiplayer mode is also seemingly gone from the game’s roadmap.
During the launch of Cyberpunk 2077, Sony even removed it from the PlayStation Store (it’s since been relisted) and the value of the game itself dramatically went down across stores and the internet. Although PC players have been enjoying mods and a more polished gameplay experience, console players had to wait over a year for the long-awaited next-gen patch.
The hit taken by CD Projekt has removed nearly 5 years of gains for the company and has dropped it from its position as Poland’s biggest game studio. Techland, the studio behind survival game Dying Light, has been seeing some massive gains and may now be Poland’s biggest game company in the market.
Despite these challenges, CD Projekt is still making gains and is planning on a new installment to The Witcher series.
