Avatar: The Way of Water (Avatar 2) has now overtaken Top Gun: Maverick as the highest-grossing movie of 2022, raking in $1.51 billion worldwide in its first three weeks since December 16.
The success of Avatar 2 has allowed for it to become the Number 10 highest-grossing film of all time, overtaken 2015’s Furious 7.
It doesn’t appear like Avatar 2 is slowing down in its success and performance anytime soon. The film is clearly continuing to bring in ticket sales and it’s expected to continue taking up premium display format showings at theaters (IMAX, Dolby, etc…).
It’s certainly great news for James Cameron, the director of the Avatar films. He had originally stated that in order to break even, Avatar 2 would need to earn at least $2 billion. With the growth at success it is currently facing, Cameron expects the Avatar 2 to break even.
James Cameron has directed three of the 10 biggest blockbusters ever, along with the first Avatar film and Titanic.
The box office success was not very clear in its opening weekend. Avatar: The Way of Water underperformed. Following its first weekend, a series of major winter storms hit and lowered potential audience numbers. Its underperformance led to Disney’s shares taking a hit.
However, it seems to have bounced back from that time. Whether or not it can match up to its predecessor has yet to be seen, but it’s currently going strong globally.
