It seems like Apple’s long-awaited mixed reality headset could be announced in the spring at the earliest. The news comes according to a top Apple supply chain analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo on Twitter.
Ming-Chi Kuo is an Apple analyst at TF International. He initially predicted in June that Apple would announce a mixed reality headset by the end of January, but on Thursday, he said he believes that Apple will postpone “mass shipment” of any product to the second or third quarter of 2023. The respected analyst stated that it’s likely due to mechanical and software issues.
Kuo is anticipating an announcement occurring in a “spring media event or WWDC based on current development.” For context, the WWDC is Apple’s annual developer conference that is typically held in June.
Apple’s headset is likely going to cost anywhere between $2,000 and $3,000 and will have more than 10 cameras on the exterior and interior of the device, according to Bloomberg. The mixed reality device is set to run on xrOS, with mixed reality adaptations of Apple’s Messages, FaceTime, and Maps apps.
It is expected that Apple’s headset will be competition for Meta and its virtual reality headsets.
Kuo is known for giving out information on Apple product releases before official news. This includes the size and design of the iPhone X back in 2016 prior to its launch and the removal of the headphone jack in the iPhone 7.
Mixed reality headsets are essentially tools used to integrate the virtual world with the real world. This is done in a number of ways, including augmented reality, projecting the digital onto the real world, and more.
