Alec Baldwin’s delayed film Rust is moving its productions to California following the shooting that took place on set last October.
It has been reportedly “too emotionally difficult” on the cast and crew to continue working in the same location.
The movie project was delayed last year after Alec Baldwin’s prop gun fired on cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, killing her. Baldwin is expected to return to filming in January however.
The movie’s producers do not yet have a set location to re-shoot the movie, but they’re currently looking in the region between Palm Springs and the Nevada border, as they don’t feel it appropriate to return to New Mexico.
Rust Movie Productions LLC’s attorney, Melina Spadone, confirmed to the press that: “[t]he production of ‘Rust’ will not return to New Mexico. The production is considering other locations, including in California, but no decisions have been made.”
The federal government has told the film’s team, namely director Joel Souza, that if they decided to re-film in New Mexico they’d have to pay a fine of up to $136,793 following “willful and serious” violations of workplace safety procedures, according to the state Occupational Health and Safety Bureau. This decision is, at the time being, being disputed in court.
Aside from a new location however the studio needs to find a new armorer, assistant director, and photographic director.
These decisions come as Alec Baldwin and the Productions LLC reached a settlement with the Halyna estate recently, partly financial. As per the terms of the agreement Matthew Hutchins, the husband to the deceased cinematographer, will serve as one of the movie’s executive producers.
Hutchins, in a court statement, said: “We have reached a settlement, subject to court approval, for our wrongful death case against the producers of ‘Rust’, including Alec Baldwin and Rust Movie Productions, LLC. As part of that settlement, our case will be dismissed.
“The filming of ‘Rust’, which I will now executive produce, will resume with all the original principal players on board in January 2023.
“I have no interest in engaging in recriminations or attribution of blame (to the producers or Mr. Baldwin).
“All of us believe Halyna’s death was a terrible accident. I am grateful that the producers and the entertainment community have come together to pay tribute to Halyna’s final work.”
