Production giant Legendary Pictures and the creators behind Cobra Kai have begun development on a new Duke Nukem film.
Legendary acquired the rights to the video game character from Gearbox studio, and will begin working with Jean Julien Baronnet, the film producer behind Assassin’s Creed. As things stand the production team is currently searching for a writer and director, although that could be where one of the three Cobra Kai creators to come into play.
Nukem was created back in 1991 by Apogee Software for Duke Nukem for PC as a comedic parody of Hollywood superheroes. The game garnered massive popularity with time and is now a $1 billion franchise.
However, the character has dwindled in popularity since then as not much has actually been done to continue the brand. In 2011 the studio would produce Duke Nukem Forever, which didn’t hold the level of popularity its predecessors once did. It was a standard, solid FPS game.
However interest was sparked for the dying brand back in 2018, when it was reported that John Cena could potentially be playing the character for a Paramount studios movie. The project was shut down however, but it’s now in development yet again, leading many to wonder whether or not Cena will be back on board.
The studios will be tasked with the difficult burden of making an actually good Duke Nukem film, something countless companies have tried but failed at in the past.
