Mortal Kombat fans will be excited to hear that a sequel film will be coming to theaters, and will have the same director as its predecessor, as confirmed by Variety magazine.

Simon McQuoid, who directed the first movie back in 2021, will be directing the sequel movie alongside Jeremy Slater. This will actually be the fourth movie in the massive video game franchise following 1995’s Mortal Kombat and 1997’s Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.

2021 saw its own Mortal Kombat movie release however, with a new, original character named Cole Young as the film’s main character.

The movie narrates the story of how Young becomes the target of game-assassin Sub-Zero and enters the world of Mortal Kombat. While there unfortunatley was no game-style tournament in the film, it was hinted that the sequel will, indeed, have one.

Fans of the game who watched the movie also saw characters like Sonya Blade, Jax Briggs, Kung Lao, Liu Kang, and Shang Tsung, and everyone’s favorite character: Scorpion.

The movie only grossed a minor $84 million worldwide, even with its being released in theaters and HBO’s streaming service at the same time. However, part of the blame could fall on the Covid pandemic, which kept many would-be cinema goers from actually going. Either way however, it was HBO Max’s msot successful film at the time.

McQuoid, who will be directing the second film in the series, originally worked on directing advertisements and commercials for many gaming franchises, including Call of Duty and Halo. Alongside the new film he’s also working on a new science-fiction thriller for Sony.
