Tom Cruise’s most profitable film ever, Top Gun: Maverick, is now 2022’s most profitable film as well, after it became one of the very few movies in history to make over $1 billion at the Box Office.

It’s the very first movie of the year to reach the mark, and the second since the beginning of the pandemic. It’s also one of the rare few films that did incredibly well without airing in Chinese or Russian markets.

This milestone follows just over a month at cinemas across the world. It has beaten Cruise’s original most profitable film Mission: Impossible – Fallout, which made $791.1 million worldwide. Maverick is set to go ever higher than $1 billion.

The film has beaten Marvel’s Doctor Strange in The Multiverse of Mayhem, which was the year’s most successful film originally, coming in at around $943 million. However it isn’t without reason.

Top Gun: Maverick has been praised as one of the year’s best films, and the buzz created around it has led to surges of interest, allowing it to dominate its competition since its opening week. Not only is it Cruise’s most successful film; it’s also the first in his career to make over $100 million in one week alone.

Another reason it did so well was due to return customers. According to North American theater statistics, 16% of the audience had returned more than one time while 4% had returned three+ times. That’s an impressive set of statistics for a film, especially after coming out of the pandemic-era, which saw dwindling sales for movie studios in North America.

This is one of many successful Paramount Studios films that came out this year; among them Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Scream.
