Texas will allow investigations of families with trans kids to continue

The Texas Supreme Court is allowing the state to continue investigating parents of transgender children for abuse. However, the Court also ruled in favor of a family that was investigated by child welfare officials.

Governor Greg Abbott was the first to order child welfare officials to investigate reports of children undergoing transitions as abuse.

Ex-Tennessee nurse will serve no jail time in death of patient after medical error

A former Tennessee nurse was convicted of murder in 2017 after a patient died under her care due to an inadvertent medication swap. On Friday, she was sentenced to serve three years of probation with no jail time.

RaDonda Vaught was a nurse at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and was found guilty of two charges, criminally negligent homicide and abuse of an impaired adult. 75-year-old Charlene Murphy had died under Vaught’s care after a medication error was made.

If Vaught meets the terms of her probation, the charges may be wiped from her record.

Shooting in Texas’ Koreatown may have been a hate crime, police chief says

Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia said on Friday that a shooting that wounded three women of Korean descent at a hair salon may have been a hate crime, one day after police ruled out hate as a factor.

Garcia said that the shooter may have been connected to at least two other crimes targeting the Asian community.

Manhunt underway in Texas for convicted murderer who escaped prison bus

A convicted murderer serving a life sentence in Texas stabbed the driver of a prison transport bus and escaped Thursday.

Gonzalo Lopez, 46, had been able to slip out of his shackles, stab the driver, and then jumped out of the bus. The driver’s stab wound was not fatal.

A manhunt is currently underway for Lopez, who was sentenced to life in prison after he shot at a sheriff’s office deputy in 2004 and killed a man with a pickaxe after holding him for ransom.

North Korea confirms first COVID-19 deaths

North Korea has reported 21 new deaths and 174,000 more people infected with fever symptoms.

The total death toll from COVID-19 has now risen to 27 and 524,000 infections. The nation is scrambling to control the spread of COVID-19 and declared an emergency lockdown.

Experts argue that if North Korea fails to control the spread, it could have devastating impacts on the nation due to its poor health care system and its largely unvaccinated population of 26 million.

Ukraine court begins first war crimes trial for Russian soldier

21-year-old Vadim Shisimarin has been put on trial by a Ukraine court for war crimes after he was accused of shooting a 62-year-old Ukrainian man in the head in the village of Chupakhivka during the first week of the war. He currently faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Shishimarin stated that he was “ordered to shoot. I shot one (round) at him. He falls. And we kept on going.”

Israeli police beat mourners of American-Palestinian journalist with batons

The slain Al Jazeera journalist, Shireen Abu Akleh, was killed during an Israeli raid in the West Bank. During her funeral, thousands attended and marched from Jerusalem’s Jaffa Gate to Mount Zion cemetery. At the St. Joseph hospital complex, Israeli police began to beat some of the individuals carrying the coffin with batons.

Mourners had wanted to transport her coffin on foot to the Greek Catholic church, where a service would be held, and then to the burial site. Israeli police demanded they transport the body by car. They then began to beat at the mourners. Her body was transported by car.

Al Jazeera live footage showed Abu Akleh’s coffin being rocked back and forth and then falling when the police began to hit at the pallbearers.

Senator Rand Paul blocks $40 billion aid to Ukraine

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul has blocked the $40 billion aid package for Ukraine, delaying approval until next week. He denied the Senate unanimous consent.

Paul has been known to stand against American involvement abroad. He argued that the new bill was more than the U.S. spent on most domestic programs, was comparable to Russia’s entire defense budget, and would worsen inflation and make federal deficits worse.

“No matter how sympathetic the cause, my oath of office is to the national security of the United States of America. We cannot save Ukraine by dooming the U.S. economy.”

UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan has died at 73

The President of the UAE, Sheikh Khalifa, has died at age 73. The country has announced a 40-day mourning period.

Khalifa was the country’s second president and had been serving since 2004. He is credited with the transformation of the UAE into the economic powerhouse it is today.

In 2014, he suffered a stroke and underwent surgery.

Elon Musk says Twitter deal is ‘temporarily on hold’

Elon Musk said that his $44 billion acquisition of Twitter was “temporarily on hold” over concerns about fake accounts. Two hours later, he followed up by saying that he was “still committed to the acquisition.”

Twitter shares fell after Musk’s tweet, closing at $40.70, down by 9.7%.
