Sony says Starfield is evidence against Microsoft-Activision deal

In the latest chapter of the Sony and Microsoft drama regarding Activision, Sony has pointed to Starfield as an argument against the deal. Sony has now claimed that Microsoft’s handling of Starfield is proof that it cannot be trusted to keep Call of Duty multiplatform.

Microsoft has recently made commitments to make sure Call of Duty makes it to more platforms, including signing a deal with Nintendo guaranteeing Call of Duty on its platforms for at least a decade. Microsoft has also stated several times that it would keep Call of Duty on the PlayStation.

Microsoft also offered a similar 10-year guaranteed deal with Sony, but Sony apparently isn’t satisfied by that. Sources claim that Sony’s Jim Ryan wants to stop the Activision deal and doesn’t want any contracts with Microsoft regarding Call of Duty.

In recent comments to the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority, Sony stated that Microsoft had previously said that it would have no incentive to limit making Bethesda-made games on multiple platforms.

However, Starfield, the next Bethesda release, is an Xbox Series X/S exclusive. This means that PlayStation will not be getting the game. Sony is pointing out that this counters Microsoft’s past comments and that the company cannot be trusted to keep its Call of Duty guarantees.

It is worth pointing out, however, that Starfield was never declared a multiplatform title when it was first announced.

Sony claims that it was implied that Starfield would release on PlayStation, which is what their current argument centers around. But, there is no definitive proof as of now.

Additionally, Sony is infamous for signing strict exclusivity contracts, effectively keeping many games off of Xbox and PC. This is a point many who are for the Activision deal with Microsoft have pointed out in the past.

Still, we have yet to see what’s next for the deal, which has been basically okayed by the EU.
