It looks like Hi-Fi Rush has beat Forspoken over on Steam according to the Steam Weekly Global Top Sellers list on SteamDB. The list typically looks at Steam titles according to revenue earnings. Hi-Fi Rush made it into the eighth position but Forspoken didn’t even make the top 10.
The reason why the news is pretty shocking is because Hi-Fi Rush just sort of came out of nowhere. It was announced last week in the Xbox Developer Direct presentation and released suddenly. Meanwhile, Forspoken has been advertised to high extents and had a very strong marketing campaign. For Hi-Fi Rush to outperform Forspoken is a big deal when we consider this.
Additionally, Forspoken is $70, but Hi-Fi Rush is $30 and is also on Xbox Game Pass. This means that Hi-Fi Rush would’ve had to sell a few copies for every copy of Forspoken sold.
SteamDB does treat separate versions of each game as different products though. For example, the Dead Space remake is in the top 10 four times for four different editions—the standard, Deluxe, and pre-order.
Also, it’s not very clear how many people pre-ordered Forspoken nor how many were able to get keys from third-party sellers. This wasn’t included in the chart, so if they were included, there is a possibility that it could’ve helped with boosting the overall revenue number.
As some have noted, Forspoken is a high-end game made exclusively for the PlayStation 5, but also received a PC port. It requires more demanding hardware than Hi-Fi Rush, which might have helped Hi-Fi Rush beat Forspoken in sales.
Hi-Fi Rush is the latest release by Tango Gameworks, a studio formed by Resident Evil director Shinji Mikami. The game is a rhythm action game, which means that the aim is to time attacks to the beat in order to deal more damage.
