Popular game developer and producer, Hideo Kojima and his studio Kojima Productions have partnered with executive producer Alex Lebovici’s (Barbarian) Hammerstone Studios to develop and produce a movie adaptation of Death Stranding.
In a report by Deadline, the movie will be financed by Hammerstone Studios. Kojima and Lebovici will serve as producers. Additionally, Kojima Productions US and Allan Ungar will take on the roles of executives producers.
There have not been many details revealed yet regarding what we can expect from the Death Stranding film. Deadline did state that it will “introduce new elements and characters within the Death Stranding universe.”
Additionally, no news has been revealed yet on who will direct and write the film. However, it is “now on the fast track, with development underway.”
Back in 2021, Kojima Productions opened a division for movies, TV, and music. Now, it looks like we’re going to be getting the first major production from that new division.
Kojima said that he is very “excited about this new partnership with Hammerstone Studios” and that it “is a very pivotal moment for the franchise.”
Kojima added that he is “really looking forward to collaborating with [Hammerstone] in bringing DEATH STRANDING to the big screen.”
Lebovici also commented on the deal, saying that: “We are thrilled and honored to have the opportunity to partner with brilliant and iconic Hideo Kojima on his first film adaptation. Unlike other big budget tentpole video game adaptations, this will be something far more intimate and grounded.
“Our goal is to redefine what a video game adaptation could be when you have creative and artistic freedom. This film will be an authentic ‘Hideo Kojima’ production.”
The news of the Death Stranding movie comes after a sequel to 2019’s Death Stranding was revealed to be in development during The Game Awards 2022. It looks like the sequel will follow Fragile and a look at Sam Bridges in his older years.
Death Stranding is available on PS5 and PC, as well as PC Game Pass. The game received mixed reviews, with many calling it an artistic masterpiece but others criticizing its gameplay.
