Look, you won’t be getting any crazy titles on a Macbook like Call of Duty or God of War, but the Macbook isn’t entirely terrible at running games either. There are plenty of video games you can play on a Macbook and use Bluetooth to connect your controller to as well.
Mac users can buy video games through things like Steam–which is one of the biggest marketplaces for video games–or other launchers like Epic Games. It’s pretty much the same process that you use on Windows, but your choices will be more limited.
However, one of the cool things about Macbooks is that you can download games from the App Store. There are lots of really cool games available through the Apple Arcade and the App Store in general, so it’s not like you don’t have any choices.
So, here are ten video games you can play on a Macbook right now:
1. Stardew Valley
Stardew Valley is a pretty unique role-playing game that allows you to simulate the farm life. You take on the role of a character that has to fix up an old dilapidated farm left behind by your grandfather. You can do things like grow crops, raise livestock, fish, mine, and even socialize with townspeople. Four players can play online together, which is pretty neat!
Since the game released, it’s sold approximately 20 million copies and is a big hit with a lot of people. It’s definitely worth a play if you’re on a Macbook and want a chill, fun game to try out.
2. The Sims 4
The Sims 4 just recently went free-to-play, so we had to include it on this list. The Sims 4 is the ultimate life-simulator. Developed and published by EA, The Sims 4 allows you to build up families and simulate life in a whole crazy way.
The Sims 4 does have lots of expansion packs and cosmetics add-ons that can help enhance the base gameplay a lot. However, some of those can be…well…expensive when added up together. Buyer beware. Still, The Sims 4 is a fun game and one that is worth playing if you’re on a Macbook.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider has multiple difficulty levels and has lots of action and adventure in it. It’s pretty different compared to The Sims 4 and Stardew Valley. Basically, it’s not a chill game, but it’s a great one for fans of the thrilling.

4. Fortnite
Fortnite is probably one of the most popular battle royale games ever and it’s free-to-play. The only thing you have to pay for is cosmetics, which a lot of people definitely do. However, it’s optional. Still, playing Fortnite on a Macbook is a bit complicated what with Apple and Epic Games not liking each other much these days.
You just need to install Windows on your Mac and download the Windows version of Fortnite. An alternative is to use a cloud gaming service like Nvidia’s GeForce Now, which has a free version.
5. Cuphead
Cuphead is definitely an iconic game that is so much fun to play. Drawn in a cool retro style, Cuphead is about a character literally named Cuphead who loses a game against the Devil and must go on a quest to repossess the souls of runaway debtors.
It’s got a very cool art-style, fun gameplay, and it’s not a super-easy game either, which is the best part. There’s plenty of boss fights and tons of running involved, but it’s a great video game to try out any day.
6. Cities: Skylines
For the people out there that love to build and design cities, Cities: Skylines is a perfect video game to play on a Macbook. Basically, this simulation game lets you plan out your urban dream. Not only do you get to build the city, but you control things like zoning, taxation, public services, and more.
It’s a pretty cool game and it’s got some neat graphics, which makes it fun to play and nice to look at. It’s definitely one of the best video games you can play on a Macbook right now.
7. Firewatch
Firewatch is a pretty unique video game. It’s a narrative-focused game about a fire lookout named Henry who works at the Shoshone National Forest, one year after the Yellowstone fires of 1988. However, a moth after he starts working at Shoshone, strange things start happening to him and his supervisor.
When the game released in 2016, it was met with a lot of praise for its story, characters, and its visuals. There were some bugs and glitches, but it won quite a few awards and sold a little over one million copies the year it released.
8. Final Fantasy XIV
For fans of MMORPGs, Final Fantasy XIV is perfect. This video game lets you design your own custom avatar and explore the fantasy realm of Eorzea. A Realm Reborn was the re-release of Final Fantasy XIV since the first version that released in 2010 was pretty much a complete flop for Square Enix.
The second release got a lot more praise and acclaim compared to the first version, which is a bonus. For people who want online games with a strong narrative aspect, FFXIV is a perfect video game to play on the Macbook.
9. Papers, Please
Papers, Please is a game that is worth a lot of praise. It’s an indie title that has captured the attention of many, many people. You play as an inspector at a border patrol office and have to basically admit or deny people into the authoritarian nation of Arstotzka. There’s a lot at stake, because you have to take care of your family and ensure you’re doing your job perfectly.
The game introduces new problems every day and has many endings, which makes every playthrough more interesting than the last. Check out our review on Papers, Please!
10. Limbo
Limbo is a very unique game on this list. It’s a puzzle-platformer where you play as an unnamed boy who must go through dangerous environments and traps in the search for his sister. Limbo is pretty intense, because you’re almost guaranteed to fail the puzzles at least once. Plus, there’s a lot of gruesome imagery for the boy’s death, raising the stakes a lot for this game.
Limbo has an interesting aesthetic and looks similar to horror movies with its black-and-white tones and film grain. Journalists pretty much labeled it art in the form of a video game. So, this is definitely a video game worth playing on your Macbook.
Conclusions
There are a lot more games, but these ten video games are the best to play on a Macbook. Not only do they provide a lot of variety in gameplay, but they’re fun and unique. Just because you’re not on a Windows device doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy video games too.
