Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow said that there should have only been one Jurassic Park movie, but he ultimately decided to expand the franchise anyways.
In an interview with Empire magazine, Trevorrow suggested Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park was an “inherently un-franchisable” movie that didn’t really need sequels at all. Trevorrow also stated that in order for the franchise to continue going forward, it had to evolve and find new opportunities for storytelling.
“For the franchise to be able to move forward — because it’s inherently unfranchisable, there should probably have been only one Jurassic Park — but if we’re gonna do it, how can I allow them to tell stories in a world in which dinosaurs exist, as opposed to, here’s another reason why we’re going to an island?”
Trevorrow had to change the core of the franchise and give a story about humans existing alongside dinosaurs. He’s also hoping that Jurassic World Dominion was a foundation for future Jurassic movies instead of a franchise conclusion.
“This movie clearly takes a real interest in creating new characters that a new generation is going to latch on to — Kayla Watts [DeWanda Wise] and Mamoudou Athie’s character Ramsay Cole, who I think, in the Extended Edition, you really feel his purpose in a greater way. And Dichen Lachman’s character [Soyona Santos], who just gets arrested at the end. There’s more to come.”
Jurassic World Dominion was a box office hit, with fans of the dinosaur franchise flocking to cinemas to check out the latest film. Jurassic World Dominion saw the return of Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, and Sam Neill. However, many critiqued the film for making the reunion of these franchise legends underplayed.
