Tom Hanks, the two-time Oscar winning actor, has revealed some information about his newest novel. Titled, The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece, the novel is set to release on May 9, 2023 and will be published by Penguin Random House.
Hanks has revealed what details readers can expect, including his experiences in the movie business and the making of a “colossal, star-studded, multimillion-dollar superhero action film and the humble comic book that inspired it.”
Tom Hanks, now 66, spoke with PEOPLE about the novel, as well as how he drew from his own experiences in Hollywood. In an interview, he said that “every character in the book does something I’ve experienced while making a movie, as well as discovered a philosophy or learned an important lesson. Even the foolish moments are some kind of stunt I’ve pulled or mistake I’ve survived.”
The story of The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece takes place over several decades and showcases how American culture has changed since World War II. Part of the story features a soldier in 1947 who comes home from the war and leaves an impression on his 5-year-old nephew, who later grows up to draw a comic book and makes his uncle one of the characters. The story then follows a director’s desire to turn the comic book into a superhero movie.
Hanks said that “movie making is very hard work over a very long period of time that consists of so many moments of joy slapped up against an equal number of feelings of self-loathing. It is the greatest job in the world and the most confounding of labors that I know of.”
He continued, quoting Hamlet by Shakespeare: “I hope the book captures as much of ‘the accidental judgements and casual slaughter’ that go into a motion picture’s dictum to hold ‘a mirror up to nature’ that I have witnessed and caused since I joined the Screen Actors Guild.”
