Despite the slumping box office figures lately, The Woman King has surprised us all by making $19 million at the box office. With the weekend coming to an end, the box office made a total of $48.5 million–the fourth worst week on record.

Sony’s The Woman King starring Viola Davis has exceeded expectations in the box office and has received an A+ CinemaScore. It’s the second movie this year to receive high scores from audiences, with the first being Top Gun: Maverick. The film had a budget of about $50 million.

With 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, The Woman King seems to have both audiences and critics captivated with its story. The movie premiered across 3,765 cinemas, with 34% of its revenue coming from IMAX and other large premium screen showings.

The Woman King is a story inspired by true events, telling the tale of a group of female African warriors who give up marriage and motherhood to defend their nation.

Coming in second place for the box office is the critically acclaimed horror movie, Barbarian. The film grossed about $6.3 million this weekend. The 20th Century/Disney film had a budget of about $10.5 million and tells the story of a rental booking gone wrong in every way possible. Barbarian is currently sitting at a 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
