Fanbyte, a popular video game website that found its origins back in 2018 by Tencent games, has been hit with major layoffs today which included the website’s chief editor and head of media.
As reported by the company’s employees, the layoffs were completely sudden and came without any warning. This is just one of many series of layoffs that video game websites have been experiencing lately, with G4TV suffering layoffs earlier this week.
The firings began around 12:45 pm, when Fanbyte’s head of media John Warren stated on Twitter that he had been fired. Multiple others reported being fired suddenly following that, including the company’s EIC.
Kotaku spoke with laid-off Fanbyte staff who told them that they were being contacted by management one-by-one, and that by 2:05 pm around 6 employees had been fired already. This number will probably increase across the day however.
Fanbyte was started back in 2018, going under the name Zam, as a subsidiary of Tencent Holdings Ltd., a Chinese mega-conglomerate.
