Head of Respawn Entertainment and co-founder of Infinity Ward, Vince Zampella, has given his thoughts on the poor reception towards Battlefield 2042.
In an interview with Barrons that was transcribed by VGC, Zampella suggested DICE had “strayed a little too far” from the original style of Battlefield and forgot “what makes that fun.”
“I think they just strayed a little too far from what Battlefield is,” Zampella said. “They tried to do a couple of things that were maybe ambitious: grow the player count etc… I don’t think they spent enough time iterating on what makes that fun.
“It’s not inherently a bad idea,” he added. “The way they were set up and the way they executed just didn’t allow them to find the best thing possible.”
Back in December, it was reported that Zampella would be leading development on Battlefield from now on. The move was a part of a major shakeup for the franchise. It seems like there will be a “connected Battlefield universe” that would consist of multiple unannounced games or experiences.
Zampella did not reveal much about the future of Battlefield, but confirmed it would start with a “whole new structure.”
“We’re putting multiple studios together. We’re bringing the best talent together and giving them the time to do something amazing.”
Battlefield 2042 launched a while ago and suffered from negative reviews and poor reception. Fans felt that the game was broken and unfinished, and even EA acknowledged that Battlefield 2042 had a bad launch. However, they did pin some of the blame on Halo Infinite and COVID-19.
EA has stated since that it is “fully committed” to improving Battlefield 2042 with updates. DICE has already tried to fix some items, including bringing classes back to the game.
Additionally, DICE admitted that the addition of specialists was “polarizing,” stating that:
“We have heard you, so in Season 3, we’ll be moving specialists into the classic and familiar Battlefield class system. They’ll have traits available to all specialists within a given class with existing open gadgets and throwables split between classes to fit their role.”
Battlefield 2042 is not completely dead yet, but it’s certainly worlds away from the popularity that other Battlefield games had enjoyed.
