Venice film festival

2022’s 79th annual Venice Film Festival wrapped up on Saturday after Laura Poitra won the Golden Lion award.

The American director won the prize for her documentary film about photographer Nan Goldin’s campaign against the Sackler pharmaceutical family. It received the award after being nominated as the event’s best film.

Poitras, also the filmmaker behind Citizenfour, congratulated the festival for recognizing “documentary is cinema” during her award ceremony.

The event’s second place prize went to Saint Omer, a documentary about a young novelist who observes an infanticide trial. The film is produced by Alice Diop. The event’s acting prizes went to Cate Blanchett and Colin Farrell for their work in TAR and The Banshees of Inishering, respectively.

“Thank you so much, it’s such an enormous honour,” Blanchett stated. This comes after his return to Venice from the Telluride festival, where the film also debuted.

The Silver Lion award went to Luca Guadagnino after he directed Bones and All, a cannibal-romance film starring Timothee Chalamet. Taylor Russell, Chalamet’s co-star, won the best young actress award.

“I have a speech prepared because I’m nervous,” Russell said at the ceremony. “I’m grateful beyond belief to be standing here. So many of my heroes are in this room.”
