Last month, Ubisoft publicly committed to attending the new E3, which is returning in-person this year. However, the Assassin’s Creed publisher has now announced that it will no longer be attending this year’s physical E3 event.

According to VGC, a statement form Ubisoft revealed that the company has decided to “move in a different direction” and will be hosting its own Ubisoft Forward Live event on June 12 in Los Angeles.

A spokesperson from Ubisoft spoke to VGC, saying that: “While we initially intended to have an official E3 presence, we’ve made the subsequent decision to move in a different direction, and will be holding a Ubisoft Forward Live event on 12th June in Los Angeles. We look forward to sharing more details with our players very soon.”

E3 has typically been the biggest industry event for game publishers to reveal upcoming projects and titles. Since the pandemic hit, E3 has either been canceled or has gone online. Now, for the first time in four years, E3 is returning for a physical event.

However, many other companies have also pulled out of E3. Xbox and Nintendo stated that they would not be in attendance. Now, Ubisoft joins the roster. It is also a big shock for many, as Ubisoft has always been a strong supporter of E3. CEO Yves Guillemot had previously expressed support for the new 2023 plans.

E3’s new organizer ReedPop claimed that unnamed “AAA companies, in addition to indie darlings and tech and hardware firms’ had committed to “making their return” to the lACC.

“The full roster of exhibitors will be announced in the leadup to the expo, providing participating companies the opportunity to make their own individual announcements beforehand,” it said in a statement.

However, Ubisoft’s pulling out is bringing the roster into question by many.
