Hats are great.
They block out the sun, they can hide messy hair, and most importantly they look nice. However, they’re one of those things that don’t get too expensive. The most the average person is willing to spend on a hat can vary, but it tends to land under $100.
But would you buy a million dollar hat? It’s probably hard to believe something like that even exists in the first place, but you’d be shocked by how expensive some hats can be. From tens of thousands to tens of millions, these are some of the most expensive hats in the world.
#5: Charlie Chaplin’s Bowler Hat- $62K
Charlie Chaplin’s famous Bowler Hat is arguably one of the most recognizable hats in history. It’s made of black felt and features an inner golden lining. The iconic bowler hat was a very popular fashion trend during the latter 1800’s, and even though the actor only wore it once in a 1936 film, it is still widely associated with him.
The hat was auctioned back in 2012 by his estate for a whopping $62k dollars!
#4: Princess Beatrice’s Royal Wedding Hat- $133,600
The strange, ring-like hat pictured above is the royal hat, designed by Philip Treacy for Princess Beatrice of the British royal family. The hat was made from white Irish waxed mohair and has a Chantilly lace trim, all handmade. The hat is currently valued at a shocking $133,600.
#3: Deep Blue Sea- $890,000
Deep Blue Sea is a gorgeous iconic hate named appropriately after its design. The hat is made from black wool felt and is lined with silk. It’s a strange and unique design and while you may not be the type to wear it, it would certainly make a nice design piece!
That is of course, if you’re willing to drop almost $1 million on it. Yup, this hand-made hat, characterized by its 26 real feathers will cost its owner around $890,000 at a Bonham Auction back in 2008. It’s currently held at a Bonham auction house.
#2: Chapeau d’Amour- $2.7M
This bizarre hat is one of the most flashy, and expensive, ones we’ve seen yet. The Chapeau d’Amour, which translates to “love’s cap,” is made of platinum fabric which has been encrusted in diamonds, obviously adding to its value.
But what really made the hat so famous was its showing at the Christie’s gallery in London, worn by Victoria Beckham. Later down the line famous actress Alicia Witt would wear it at the 2008 New York Fashion Week.
1: The Pope’s Tiara- $10M
The Pope’s Tiara is currently the most expensive hat in the world, valuing at over $10 million. It’s crusted with 540 pearls, 22 emeralds, 8 sapphire gems, and 11 diamonds. No wonder the price tag is so high!
The hat itself is incredibly old and rare, raising its price point even higher when considering its status. The practice of Pope’s donning tiaras was ended in 1975 however.
