Sorcerer guide Dragon's Dogma 2

The sorcerer is a powerful magic-based vocation in Dragon’s Dogma 2 that provides a lot of exciting gameplay moments but definitely does take getting used to if you’re like me and you usually run a more head-on offensive build in RPGs. Still, the sorcerer is definitely tough and it’s no wonder it’s such a powerful vocation. Here is everything you need to know about making the best sorcerer build for Dragon’s Dogma 2!

How to Unlock the Sorcerer Vocation

There are ultimately two ways that you can unlock the sorcerer vocation and both ways aren’t particularly too complicated, but one of the ways is objectively much easier than the other way. I’ll go through both in case you really want to try out either one.

The first way you can unlock the sorcerer is by heading to the vocation guild in Vermund. The first time that you’re there, the attendant at the vocation guild will explain to you that the sorcerer and warrior vocations are both unavailable because they don’t have the weapons for them. You’ll then get a quest that prompts you to obtain a greatsword and archstaff in order to unlock the vocations. You’ll find out that the weapons you want are being held up by goblins and you’re going to have to go and attack them.

The second way is much easier. In the main storyline, you’ll just need to play through the coronation questline which ends with you attempting to go to the coronation and learning about the godsbane. Once that questline is finished, you’ll get access to both the warrior and sorcerer vocation without needing to find any weapons for them.

Best Weapon Skills

The sorcerer’s weapon skills are mainly based around incanting all sorts of spells. These spells do bear a resemblance to the mage, but the main difference is that the sorcerer’s spells take much longer to incant and deal more damage. It’s very much a long-range attacking class compared to the mage, but there are some ways to incant spells quickly.

In any case, the weapon skills are varied and there are many that you can pick from, but you can only equip four at a time. These are the skills that I personally found to be the best for an all-rounded and powerful gameplay experience.

Firstly, levin is a personal favorite of mine. This weapon skill allows you to incant a spell to shoot lightning bolts from the sky and onto the enemies that you’re targeting below. If you upgrade this to high levin, which is what I’m using throughout the clips you’re seeing in the background, then you’ll be able to continue following up with attacks and deal more damage. Do be warned that you will have to deal with losing stamina with each follow up attack.

Flagration is another awesome weapon skill that I find myself using all the time. This weapon skill lets you incant a spell to shoot out a giant wave of fire towards your enemies for a period of time. You can upgrade this skill as well. I find that it works very nicely when it comes to dealing with goblins, as the hobgoblins can be especially annoying but flagration tends to work well on them.

Decanter is an interesting one that I think works nicely if you set your party up right and can position yourself at a decent-enough distance from your enemies. Decanter lets you release a spell that takes the health away from your enemies and gives it to yourself, and you can basically drain your enemy of its health that way. This is especially great if you’re dealing with bosses or larger foes and can stay far away safely enough. This can be upgraded too.

Salamander is another one that I use all the time and I find that this skill is effective for getting away from enemies and allowing yourself some room to get to safety. Salamander lets you unleash some fire that will set a good portion of the ground in front of you aflame, setting any enemy that touches it on fire. This is great for dealing passive damage while you reorient yourself.

There are plenty of other spells and skills that you can use, but I personally found that these provided an effective gameplay experience.

Core Skills

Core skills are not limited to four like the weapon skills, so you should unlock all of these. The sorcerer has many weapon skills, and I’ll list and briefly explain them now.

Galvanize lets you recover your stamina by focusing, which is helpful after dealing some stamina-draining attacks.

Magick bolt fires a magickal burst at enemies that can be cast to quickly attack enemies.

Bursting bolt is a way to make the standard magick bolt used by the sorcerer vocation more effective. Holding down the attack button will store up magick and then when its unleashed at an enemy, it explodes after hitting the enemy, which deals even more damage.

Quickspell allows you to greatly hasten the speed of your incantations but it consumes stamina while active. Still, it’s very helpful since the sorcerer vocations take a long time to incant.

Levitate is another great skill that lets you fly temporarily, which is pretty cool and is good to get away from some enemies to get to higher ground, since the sorcerer vocation is not really effective at close range as you’re very likely to get attacked if you’re not at a safe distance.

Augments

Augments are not locked to a single vocation so you can pretty much just pick augments from any other vocation to make your build for the sorcerer. You can also just simply use the sorcerer arguments, but you may find that combining augments from other vocations is more effective at the end of the day.

So, here are the augments that I use in my sorcerer build that I found worked out to be the best.

Asperity is a sorcerer augment and increases the chance of inflicting debilitations with your attacks against enemies.

Mettle is from the fighter vocation and augments your physical defense, which I think is important if you’re going to be playing as the sorcerer since defense isn’t really your strong suit in this vocation.

Opulence doesn’t boost gameplay wise but I like this one because it does increase gold obtained when acquiring gold pouches and this is from the magick archer vocation.

Gratification is from the thief vocation and slightly increases your health when you deal a killing blow against enemies.

Constancy is another augment I used and this one augments your knockdown resistance so you don’t get knocked down as easily with this augment. When you’re the sorcerer, sometimes you may find some enemies attacking you or getting close to you and you’ll likely be hit, so you’ll find that having better knockdown resistance lets you reorient yourself in the fight better.

There’s also lethality, endurance, and avidity from the archer vocation. As listed in order, these increase damage dealt with striking a target’s vitals, increases max stamina, and lets you climb up cliffs, scale foes and other places faster.

There’s a lot of augments across the classes so pick the ones that you find fit your gameplay style the best, but the ones I listed above tend to be good options either way.

Maister Skill

Getting the maister skill for the sorcerer is actually a bit more complicated than some of the other vocations. You have to first dress in the courtly raiments and go to this house in the checkpoint rest town. There, you’ll speak to the sorcerer maister named Myriddin who will task you with getting some grimoires of magic spells that he wants, and this is going to take some time because you have to go to different places around the map to get them.

There is also another sorcerer maister named Trysha who you will have to meet at in Eini’s home. Both sorcerers will task you with finding the same five grimoires. You’re going to have to get them forged at Ibrahim’s in the checkpoint rest town and be sure to give the originals to Trysha.

Do note that you can complete the mission by finding just three grimoires, so don’t worry about getting all five if you don’t want to or if you lose one.

The maister skill is called meteoron, which summons a meteor shower to cause intense damage against enemies. You’ll also get a skill called Celestial Paean which summons holy light to make your allies heal faster, but this is for the Mage vocation so don’t worry about that right now.

Myriddin will give you a maister skill called maelstrom which causes a whirlwind in order to wreak havoc on your enemies. So, there are a good number of maister skills for the sorcerer vocation, it does take time, but the reward is pretty high.

Party Setup

Sorcerers are more attack-class than support-class like mages, so despite the overlap between the vocations, you should still bring along a mage with you to do things like heal you, heal your party, cast holy light and more. You should also have up-close and personal vocations in your party because the sorcerer is a long-distance oriented vocation, so you need to have attack units that will take out the front lines so to speak. That’s why you should pick pawns that are of the thief vocation, the warrior vocation, or the fighter vocation to support you alongside the mage. This way, you’ll have attackers and you’ll have a support on your side.

Armor and Weapons

The sorcerer, being a long-distance class, has more use with upgraded and better weapons than armor. Although armor is still important because there’s a chance of getting attacked in battle, especially against Saurians, I hate those things, but the weapon makes a difference in how good you are as a sorcerer.

I recommend you pick up a better weapon first and then worry about armor and clothing later. You can also get a pretty good sorcerer set from the underwater ruins if you’re that far yet. Either way, I really like the weapons in Bakbahttal and the checkpoint rest town as always, but vermund has a few good ones too.
