Vikings are one of the most popular groups in history. They were known for their raids of villages in Europe and their warrior-heavy culture. They’ve been the subject of many TV shows and movies, as well as documentaries and books. If you like Vikings and want to explore more about them, there are also plenty of video games out there that let you take on the role of a Viking.

10. Dead in Vinland
Dead in Vinland is a survival game with RPG and adventure elements. You play as a man named Eirik and you must help lead his family on a quest to survive.
The game features things like management of health, as well as building a camp and fighting off enemies. There are 14 playable characters and the combat is turn-based, but is described as being pretty challenging.
9. Expeditions: Viking
Expeditions: Viking is a role-playing game where you star as the newly appointed chieftain of a small Viking clan. You must grow your strength, wealth, and village so that you go down in history as a famous leader. In order to do so, you take your clan West and begin to conquer lands to grow your empire.
Expeditions: Viking earned a lot of praise for its gameplay and sits at a 9/10 on Steam.
8. God of War, God of War Ragnarok
God of War (2018) is a great game that deals with Vikings and Norse mythology as a whole. God of War Ragnarok just recently released and has already earned tons of praise, and its story-line focuses heavily on Norse mythology and Vikings.
God of War is about a Spartan soldier named Kratos who is the new God of War. There are two story-lines in God of War: The original titles dealt with Greek mythology and the second timeline deals with Norse mythology.
Since the Norse mythology aspect is so vast, technically, if you love Vikings, God of War is perfect for you.
7. Crusader Kings III
Crusader Kings III is a strategy role-playing game that lets players control kingdoms and empires. The goal is to obviously have your empire last until the time ends in 1453. Crusader Kings III places heavy emphasis on making sure your society is great and you can take over other empires and start wars.
Crusader Kings III also lets you play as Vikings and dominate the world from there. It’s gotten really high reviews and in terms of strategy games, it’s great!
6. Skyrim
Skyrim is definitely one of the best games ever made. Since it’s a fantasy RPG, players can choose to be whatever they want to be and design their character as they please. This includes being a Viking, of course.
Skyrim tells the story of the Dragonborn and their quest through the world of Skyrim. It’s an epic tale with a great soundtrack and definitely gives you the feeling of being a Viking.
5. Jotun
Jotun is an action-adventure video game that is known for its unique art style of hand-drawn frame-by-frame animation. It was developed by Thunder Lotus Games and released back in 2015.
Jotun tells the story of a recently deceased Viking woman named Thora. Since her death was inglorious, she must travel across the realms to defeat Jotunn, which are giant elements of nature, chaos, power and more. If she succeeds, she can impress the gods and enter Valhalla.
4. Valheim
Valheim is a survival sandbox game published by Coffee Stain Games (Goat Simulator) that features plenty of Vikings. Valheim was actually developed by a team of five people and sold over five million copies in just one month.
Valheim lets you play as a slain Viking in a world called Valheim, where you must prove that you are worthy to enter Valhalla. Throughout the game, you have to collect resources from nothing and eventually go on to fight enemies of Odin.
A lot of people have likened Valheim to a more advanced version of Minecraft, since it has a similar sandbox concept.
3. For Honor
For Honor doesn’t just feature Vikings, but they’re a pretty prominent part of the game. For Honor is a multiplayer game where you can pick a faction of soldiers from different countries and fight against other players in duels.
For Honor lets you play as a Viking, which you can customize and have fun with. Due to the ability to personalize everything, it’s a lot of fun to play.
2. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is the latest installment of the famous Assassin’s Creed franchise from Ubisoft. You can choose to play either as a male or female Viking. The main premise of the game is to explore regions of England and recruit kingdoms to join your side.
There’s tons of references to Norse mythology, as well as plenty of intense combat and action. For people looking to play a video game with Vikings, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is definitely a great one.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice takes place in the era of Vikings and follows a woman named Senua who is suffering from psychosis. She has to traverse through a terrifying world to try and save the soul of her dead lover.
Hellblade is certainly terrifying, but it has loads of great combat and action. For fans of games with intense and psychologically twisted stories, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is perfect.
