Police in the UK have confirmed that a teenager has been charged on suspicion of hacking, reportedly in relation to the recent data breach at Uber and Rockstar, which led to GTA 6 footage leaking.
City of London Police on Saturday said that a 17-year-old was arrested in Oxfordshire on Thursday and has now been charged with two counts of breach of bail conditions and two counts of computer misuse.
On September 24, he will appear at Highbury Corner Youth Court.
Although police have not fully confirmed if the teen arrested was responsible for the data breach at Rockstar Games, a journalist named Matthew Keys said that sources aware of the situation confirmed that ‘A.K.’ was arrested for the attacks against Rockstar Games and Uber.
The teen is believed to be associated with a hacking group named Lapsu$ and was allegedly arrested earlier this year for data breaches against Microsoft and Nvidia. Lapsu$ was thought to be defunct as of April 2022 following the arrest of several members.
Keys’ source stated that “the arrest came following an investigation by federal law enforcement officials in the United States, who worked with their counterparts in the United Kingdom to identify A.K. as a suspect in both attacks.
A law enforcement source said at least two other people are believed to be involved in the attack against Rockstar and Uber, and additional arrests are expected.”
The hacker had allegedly gained access to an internal Slack channel at Rockstar Games and leaked over one hour of Grand Theft Auto 6 footage on the GTA Forums website. The incident is likely to go down as one of the most high-profile data leaks in the gaming industry ever.
In what will likely go down as one of the games industry’s most high-profile data leaks ever, more than an hour of Grand Theft Auto 6 development footage was published last week via an anonymous user posting on the GTA Forums website.
