NetEase has bought Quantic Dream

In a blog post on Wednesday, Quantic Dream–the studio behind Detroit: Become Human–announced that they have been acquired by NetEase, a Chinese internet company. NetEase acquired Grasshopper Manufacture back in 2021 and has a major investment in Bungie, the developers behind Destiny 2 back in 2018.

NetEase previously held a small stake in Quantic Dream back in 2019, but now has completely bought the company. NetEase is also the publisher behind Blizzard Entertainment games Diablo: Immortal and World of Warcraft.

In a statement, Quantic Dream wrote:

“We met NetEase about 4 years ago and offered to join us as a minority shareholder in January 2019. During this time, we have learned a lot about each other. We started working together on small and large projects, we enjoyed working together and discussed a lot about our sector and our vision for the future. We discovered that we share the same desire to create bold, highly qualitative work that makes an impression.”

Quantic Dream will now become a part of NetEase Games, with NetEase becoming the parent company of Quantic Dream and the sole shareholder as well.

Quantic Dream is a French video game publisher that is known for Detroit: Become Human. It was founded back in 1992 and was an independent company.

For a few years, Quantic Dream had a publishing partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment. However, in 2021, Quantic Dream decided it would be self-publishing its games in the future following the major success of Detroit: Become Human.

Despite the purchase, Quantic Dream confirmed that it “will still operate independently” and that it would “maintain the ability to create and self-publish our video games on all platforms, and continue to support and publish titles developed by third parties.”
