Sony lead engineer, Masayasu Ito, leaving

Sony’s lead hardware chief for the PlayStation is leaving on October 1. Masayasu Ito, 60, was the lead engineer for both the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5. He will be replaced by current director Lin Tao. Sony announced the changes in a press release today.

Ito joined Sony back in 1986 and began working in the PlayStation division back in 2008. There, he led hardware engineering for the gaming console. He oversaw engineering on the PlayStation 4, which is one of the most successful video game consoles of all time. The PlayStation 4 has sold over 117.2 million units as of March 2022. The PlayStation 4 also sold more video games than any other console in history back in 2021.

Ito was not only responsible for the PlayStation 4, but also for the PlayStation VR headset, the PlayStation 4 Pro, and the PlayStation 5. The PS5’s work actually began back in 2015 and Ito and his team spent five years honing the design of the PS5.

Ito detailed how the development process of the PlayStation 5 focused on reducing noise levels, improving cooling, and favoring “a well thought out, beautifully designed architecture” within the PS5.

Lin Tao, the replacement for Ito, will now be in charge of any future PlayStation hardware.
