The KOTOR remake is dead

According to Giant Bomb report Jeff Grubb, the highly-anticipated and expected Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) remake is currently no longer in active development. Instead, it seems like the game has come to a halting standstill.

Grubb’s statement comes in light of a recent comment by Embracer CEO Lars Wingefors, who said that he would not give any status updates on the KOTOR remake.

“I noticed that anything I say to this becomes a headline, so that is my only comment,” Wingefors said when asked how he felt about the remake. The Knights of the Old Republic remake was meant to be in development at Embracer-owned studios Aspyr Media and Saber Interactive.

Back in August, 2022, Bloomberg reported that the KOTOR remake had moved studios from Aspyr to Saber for its development. Before that, in July, 2022, Bloomberg reported as well that the game’s development had been indefinitely paused.

Now, according to Jeff Grubb, the KOTOR remake “is not being worked on right now, full stop. This game is not being worked on in any way at any studio.” This comment was made in response to the rumors that development had moved from Aspyr to Saber.

A Long History of Issues

The KOTOR remake was meant to be a collaboration between Aspyr and Lucasfilm Games as well as Sony Interactive Entertainment. Originally meant to be a timed PS5 exclusive, the game was announced back in 2021 during a PlayStation Showcase event.

However, as mentioned earlier, development has seen some bumps in the road. As we wrote back in July, 2022:

In a report by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, developers at Austin-based Aspyr Media have indefinitely delayed work on Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic. Schreier also added that ”Aspyr also abruptly fired the game’s art director and design director this month.”

Although Embracer confirmed that Saber Interactive was helping to work on the title, and there were rumors that Saber took over the project entirely, Grubb reiterated that “to 100% confirm it, this game is not being worked on right now.”

Back in September of this year, Sony unpublished social media posts about the KOTOR remake and even delisted the reveal trailer, claiming that the reason was due to “expired music licenses.” However, it seems like there is something far deeper than that going on.

Grubb also commented that he’d heard that Sony wants “absolutely nothing to do with this [game] going forward.”

It seems like any hope fans had for a KOTOR remake have been dashed for good. At least for now.
