Instagram is now testing a new feature that seems to be similar to other social media sites like Twitter. TechCrunch reported that Instagram has confirmed tests of “reposts,” which will allow users to bring other content into their own timeline. The feature is already present in Twitter retweets, and Facebook and Tumblr reshare. TikTok has also begun working on making the repost feature more widespread.
“We’re exploring the ability to reshare posts in Feed — similar to how you can reshare in Stories — so people can share what resonates with them, and so original creators are credited for their work,” a Meta spokesperson told The Verge in a statement.
“We plan to test this soon with a small number of people.”
Matt Navarra, a social media consultant, spotted the feature and posted images of it in a Twitter thread on Wednesday. However, it looks like Instagram has been working on it for a while now.
Of course, Instagram users have been reposting other people’s content for a long time. However, it required more hoops like screenshotting and physically reposting it to their own feed. This feature would allow users to share posts without having to go through all of this.
It looks like Instagram is trying to compete hard with TikTok, bringing a lot of TikTok-style features into the platform. With the addition of Reels becoming more widely pushed forward, Instagram is also allowing users to share content to other messaging platforms aside from DMs, like Snapchat, Messenger, and WhatsApp.
However, among the features that Instagram has recently tested, the full-screen photos and videos feed did not work out well. Many did not like that they were forced to post images in full screen; plus, the AI that generated suggested posts was to many, not working properly.
