2022 has been an amazing year for Hollywood. We’ve seen huge movie releases that’ve captured our attention, shocked audiences, and made for a wonderful year. However, we’re only halfway into 2022 now and the best is yet to come, with films such as Thor: Love and Thunder set to release very soon.

But I think I’d be lying if I said it didn’t shock us all when the Barbie Movie was announced.

In one of the year’s strangest turn of events thus far the new Warner-Mattel production, a live-action film about the hit children’s toy franchise ‘Barbie’, is coming to theaters at some point next year. It’ll boast a strong cast of nig names such as Ryan Gosling, Margot Robbie, Ncuti Gatwa, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Hari Nef, Will Ferrel Kate McKinnon, Emma Mackey, Michael Cera, and many, many more. The list is almost exhaustingly long.

Robbie recently told Variety magazine “I think it’s a great opportunity to put some positivity out in the world and a chance to be aspirational for younger kids.”

We have yet to see how the roles of many of these characters will play out, as we’ve only been leaked images of the two main stars (Gosling and Robbie) thus far. It’ll be definitely interesting to see how their co-actors play their roles!

It’s not actually know as to when the movie entered the production phase. Apparently, it began back in 2014, however the script and story have been changed many times across the few years following. As things stand, the film is being directed lead by Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach.

And although it may seem like a new announcement, the film has actually been teased since late 2020. In December of that year Marogt Robbie held an interview with the Hollywood Reporter where she spoke about how the film’s production was going.

“We like the things that feel a little left of center. Something like Barbie where the IP, the name itself, people immediately have an idea of, ‘Oh, Margot is playing Barbie, I know what that is,’ but our goal is to be like, ‘Whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different—the thing you didn’t know you wanted.’ Now, can we truly honor the IP and the fan base and also surprise people? Because if we can do all that and provoke a thoughtful conversation, then we’re really firing on all cylinders.”

If that doesn’t excite you enough for how the film’s gonna go, Gerwig allegedly told the magazine “Warner Bros. is open to strange.”

Although production began under Sony back in 2014, the film itself has been discussed since 2009, making it not new in the slightest! Eventually it was transferred to Warner Bros pictures. The continuous changes throughout the movie’s production have caused the release date to unfortunatley change multiple times.

However, the confirmed date is now July 21st, 2023, and it may be available for streaming as early as September 2023.
