Dan Lin

Dan Lin, the producer behind 2014’s The Lego Movie is refusing to accept the role as the Film and TV Chief of the DCEU at Warner Bros after being offered the job recently.

Negotiations between Lin and the production studio came to a close with neither reaching a final offer. This news comes following company CEO David Zaslav’s move to merge WarnerMedia with Discovery earlier this year, which led to a stressful era of layoffs and removals from the company. This also forced Warner Bros. Discovery to remove a multitude of shows from HBO Max.

The company’s shares are now down 50% as a result.

Lin, 49, has rejected Warner Bros.’ job offer after he decided he would rather stay at Rideback, the company he founded. Alongside his studio title Lin has put out some of recent history’s most well-renowned films, including The Lego Movie and It 1 and 2.

He was one of the top candidates for the role, with many expecting him to have a high level role in the company. However, his role at Rideback is the central problem currently fueling the complications in their negotiations.

Although Lin was offered financial compensation for Rideback, he wanted to keep it running and have an equity stake in it owned by Warner Brothers Discovery, but the two parties ultimatley dropped discussions and moved on.

The DCEU has found itself the center of problems lately as they struggle to catch the same audience attention that Disney’s Marvel Studios does. Zaslav wants to find someone to fill in the head role at the studio that would fix the problem, leading him to Lin.

Back in April Zaslav offered the job opportunity to Paramount executive Emma Watts, who ultimatley declined the offer. The company is currently looking into other candidates, although Zaslav had met Lin personally to try and persuade him.

This is all in an attempt to revitalize the slowly falling DC studio after a string of failed films recently. Zaslav plans to put into play a ten-year long plan that will give the company time to fix the problems at DC studios and focus more on quality.
