USA Today reported earlier on August 26 that Amazon was planning on making an offer to acquire video game giant, EA. However, CNBC says that there are no plans for such an acquisition. The conflicting reports have left video game media outlets scrambling for answers and downright confused.
USA Today stated in their report that Swedish press agency Good Luck Have Fun claimed they had a source that was aware of an imminent offer from Amazon to acquire EA, the publisher behind video game franchises like FIFA and Battlefield.
However, CNBC anchor David Faber said on air that there are no plans from Amazon to acquire EA. “I have talked to some people who would actually know if there was something going on, and they say there’s nothing going on. These are people who would be involved.”
EA shares climbed 15% in the premarket following the USA Today report but have since lowered following CNBC’s report.
It is not yet clear which report is accurate, as both companies have yet to comment officially on the situation.
