In an interview with PCGamesN, Striking Distance Studios’ chief creative officer Chris Stone gave insight into what inspired The Callisto Protocol. He mentioned games like Silent Hill and Resident Evil as “obvious inspiration.” He also mentioned films like The Thing and Event Horizon.

Stone also stated that the team used real gore to create the realistic feel to The Callisto Protocol, commenting that it was a “lot less fun to research.” He believed that it was a memorable part in the process of creating The Callisto Protocol.

This isn’t the first time violent games have used horror from real-life as inspiration for visuals. During the development for Mortal Kombat 11, Netherrealm also claimed that their teams had to use gore videos to research violence for the game. It even caused one developer to get PTSD.
