Bungie–developer of the popular live-service game, Destiny 2–is suing individuals responsible for fake copyright claims against YouTube content creators.

The issue arises after several channels on YouTube, including Bungie’s, had DMCA strikes filed against them. DMCA stands for Digital Millennium Copyright Act. The strikes led to YouTube taking down several videos. Bungie has criticized YouTube for their strike system and how the claims were not identified as being fake.
“Given the ease with which malicious actors can exploit YouTube’s flawed DMCA practice and harm Bungie’s community, Bungie brings this action to recover for the Doe defendants’ tortious and illegal conduct, and, frankly, to demonstrate to anyone else stupid enough to volunteer as a defendant by targeting Bungie’s community for similar attack that they will be met by legal process”

The fraudulent takedowns happened between March 17 and March 22, with Google accounts being created in this time period to begin the takedown requests. Bungie stated that the issue has caused “significant reputational and economic damage.”
