Yup, you read that right. Some cinemas have begun to ban teens wearing suits from watching screenings of Minions: The Rise of Gru after a popular TikTok trend.
The increasingly popular #gentleminions trend on TikTok has led some cinemas to all together banning people in suits from watching the film following apparent reports of loud, noisy behavior. The trend is essentially groups of well-dressed teens going to watch the movie in extensive groups and cheering loudly at certain scenes in the movie.
They also film themselves copying the mannerisms and behaviors of Gru, the Despicable Me franchise’s main character.

But even though Universal Studios has been openly supportive of the trend, theaters have not held it to the same judgement. One venue reported to the BBC that the bans come as a move to try and not spoil the event for families coming to see the movie, as they’ve had to offer refunds to lots of irate customers.
A Regal cinema in Cornwall, England has put up a sign circulating online stating that “unaccompanied children wearing suits” would not be allowed to come to screenings of the film, disappointing many online.
The film tells the story of 11-year-old Gru and his rise to infamy
“We were trying to talk to people on the way in after a while, but that wasn’t really getting anywhere,” box office staff reported. “So we had to just decide to put a stop to it and say thanks very much, but we’re not doing the whole TikTok trend thing.”
“We had people coming in with children for their first cinema trip ever and we wanted to protect that, really.”
It’s also become a growing issue for standard movie goers however, when two 13 year-old boys in Mansfield were barred from their screening until their parents could arrive to vouch for them. Many have also been praising the trend for its humorous value and lack of disturbance.
Nonetheless the trend seems that it may be quieting down for a while now as more cinemas take a stance against it.
