Apple has finally revealed its new line of MacBook Pro laptops that come equipped with the most powerful processor chips yet. The M2 Pro and the M2 Max are Apple’s latest processors, and you can now buy a MacBook Pro with them.
Apple unveiled some updates and changes to its 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro laptops. Both can now be configured with the all-new powerful processors.
Apple also announced an update to the Mac mini, which will now have support for the M2 and M2 Pro. As a result of this, Apple is no longer selling an Intel version of the Mac mini.
The Mac Pro is now officially the last Apple computer that can have an Intel processor.
The Design
The new MacBook Pro laptops have not changed their design—as expected. They still have largely the same specs like the Liquid Retina XDR display.
Apple’s Liquid Retina XDR display packs a 3024 x 1964 and 3456 x 2234-pixel resolution. The smaller of the two is made for the 14-inch MacBook Pro and the other is made for the 16-inch. Both have a whopping 120 Hz refresh rate.
The New M2 Chips
The M2 Pro comes with a 10- or 12-core CPU with up to eight high-performance and four high-efficiency cores. Compared to the M1 Pro, the M2 Pro sees a 20% performance improvement.
The M2 Max is even more powerful, with a 30% performance improvement over the M1 Max. It also features a larger GPU.
Apple is saying that these new laptops are the ultimate laptops for creators. With a longer battery life and more advertised productivity abilities, the MacBook Pro does seem to be even better with the new processors.
What’s the Price?
This probably won’t come as a shock to you, but yes, the new MacBook Pro laptops are going to be a bit on the pricey side. The starting cost is $1,999.
Now, for the…ambitious, I guess, there is a special version of the M2 Max that can come with 96GB of unified memory. I want you to take a guess as to how much this one starts at.
I’ll just tell you anyways: $6,499.
I’m not really sure how many creators out there are willing to pay that much for a laptop when desktops will still have more productivity power, but there’s gotta be that special ambitious someone.
Did the Reveal Come Too Late?
Apple might lose out on some big bucks they could’ve made had the reveal been sooner. By missing out on the holiday season, Apple is expecting that it’s not going to make as much as it could have.
Back in October 2022, the chief financial officer at Apple, Luca Maestri, had warned that Apple would see a decline Mac sales over the December month because the laptops hadn’t yet launched.
Additionally, with fears of a potential recession and a lot of inflation issues for consumers, Apple might not see the same enthusiasm towards its products as it normally would’ve.
Either way, the MacBook Pro M2 Pro and M2 Max models are certainly an advancement for the laptop lineup, and is sure to get many people excited either way.
Apple is promising that users coming from Intel-based MacBook models will feel this difference the most, likely because of the sheer amount of power each of the new processors holds.
