Although Microsoft has typically kept details on the sales of the Xbox One closed off for years, the company has now confirmed that the Xbox One sales were less than half of the PlayStation 4’s sales.
In a document submitted to Brazil’s national competition regulator, Microsoft explained that “Sony has surpassed Microsoft in terms of console sales and installed base, having sold more than twice as many Xbox in the last generation.”
Sony’s PlayStation 4 had sold about 117.2 million units as of March 2022, which would mean that the Xbox One sold less than 58 million units. An report by Ampere Analysis estimated that the install base of the Xbox One was at 51 million as of Q2 2020.
However, Microsoft has been seeing a bit of a revival with the Xbox Series X and Series S. The new consoles have outsold the PlayStation 5 in Japan and more than 1 million have been sold in the UK. Around 12 million were shipped globally as of January 2022. There is also the issue of the semiconductor chip shortage, which has affected both PlayStation and Xbox consoles, and may have impacted typical sales figures. The PlayStation 5 is still selling well though.
Microsoft’s Phil Spencer confirmed that the Xbox Series X and Series S is the best-selling Xbox console series of all time over its first year of release.
In other Sony/Microsoft news, Sony recently revealed that it was worried that the Microsoft acquisition of Activision Blizzard would negatively impact its console sales. Sony believed that no other game could compete with Call of Duty.
Microsoft countered by claiming that Activision did not make any “must have” games and that Sony pays “blocking rights” to prevent games from appearing on its Game Pass subscription service.
