British Prime Minister Boris Johnson says he will be resigning once a new PM is chosen for England.
The announcement was made today following calls from both colleagues in the Parliament and members of the Conservative party to do so. This follows 50 ministers leaving their posts and British lawmakers demanding he resign.
“The process of choosing that new leader should begin now. And today I have appointed a cabinet to serve, as I will until a new leader is in place,” the former PM stated during his speech on 10 Downing Street.
This means that the Conservative side of parliament will have to choose a new leader for their party, which can take up to months to finalize. Johnson, during his resignation speech, told the crowd of onlookers that it was “painful” to do so. “My friends, in politics, no one is remotely indispensable.”
This resignation follows only two and a half years of his being PM.
The leader of England’s opposition party, the Labour Party, Keir Starmer, stated that he would call a confidence vote in parliament if the conservatives did not force Johnson to resign.
“If they don’t get rid of him, then Labour will step up in the national interest and bring a vote of no confidence because we can’t go on with this prime minister clinging on for months and months to come,” Starmer stated before the speech.
This mean that the conservatives might be forced to remove Johnson immediately, which implies he might not be PM for much longer. Many British lawmakers believe he shouldn’t be given the opportunity either.
“Ministers resigned because of the PM. The party lost confidence because of the PM. It is beyond credulity that Mr. Johnson can stay in office,” said conservative party member Simon Hoare.
“The proposal for the prime minister to remain in office — for up to three months — having lost the support of his cabinet, his government and his parliamentary party is unwise, and may be unsustainable,” said former PM John Major.
Currently, the state of the British government is uncertain. Only time will tell whether or not Johnson will fully step down.
