When asked about his new role in the MCU, Christian Bale had to ask what the MCU was in the first place.
English actor Christian Bale had no idea what the ‘MCU’ meant upon accepting his role for the upcoming Marvel film Thor: Love and Thunder. His role in the film, as ‘Gorr The God Butcher’, a freakish creature who’s main goal is to kill off all the Nordic gods, has been widely anticipated by Marvel fans since the announcement. He’ll be acting alongside Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman.
Russel Crowe will also be a new addition to Marvel’s Thor franchise. He’ll be playing the mythical character ‘Zeus’.
This isn’t Bale’s first role in a superhero film. The actor originally played Batman in The Dark Knight trilogy, a film that got him much praise from fans. His last acting role however was back in 2019, in Ford V Ferrari, making Thor his first film in 3 years.
Bale expressed clear confusion at the idea of the MCU, as shown during a Total Film interview in which he stated that he’s not bothered completely switching comic franchise roles as the idea of the cinematic universe “didn’t even enter into [his] head at all.”
I’d read that, and people would go, ‘Oh, look at this! He’s entered the MCU!’ And I’d go, ‘I’ve done what? I haven’t entered s***, thank you very much.’ I’m like, ‘The MCU?’ I had to ask what that was.
He went on to explain that the term ‘MCU’ made it sound like he was linked to something completely different than the Thor franchise. With The Dark Knight series there was no DC universe yet, and that wouldn’t happen until Man of Steel was released, so up until this point Bale has not starred in any multiverse-based film series’.
Alongside Thor: Love and Thunder Bale also plans on starring in David Russel’s new film Amsterdam, as well as The Pale Blue Eye.
