Valve has decided to suddenly confirm Counter-Strike 2 and has given a release window for Summer 2023. The exact release date has yet to be announced, but we at least have a good estimate for when we can play it. It will also run on Source Engine 2, as was previously reported.
Counter-Strike 2 will be a free upgrade for the current CS:GO and will also be available in limited testing to some CS:GO players starting today. Valve has revealed more details on how players can join the test, but the players will be selected by Valve.
Counter-Strike 2 now also has a website that suddenly popped up today. It states that Counter-Strike 2 is “the largest technical leap forward in Counter-Strike’s history, ensuring new features and updates for years to come.”
Several videos were also released by Valve today, giving more insight on what Counter-Strike 2 will be like. Specifically, Valve highlighted its “upgraded and overhauled maps,” “game-changing” smoke grenades, tick-rate-independent gameplay, and redesigned visual effects and audio.
The maps in CS2 have been “fully rebuilt from the ground up, leveraging all of the new Source 2 tools and rendering features.”
Valve also stated that upgraded grenades will now have the ability to interact with other gameplay events, will expand to naturally fill spaces, and will react to lightning.
“Regardless of tick rate, your moving and shooting will be equally responsive and your grenades will always land the same way.”
Players will have all CS:GO items carried over to CS2.
