Starring Johnny Depp, Pirates of the Caribbean is one of the most popular and famous movie franchises to ever exist. The series of Disney films tells stories about a pirate named Captain Jack Sparrow and his adventures through perilous situations.
Although some Pirates of the Caribbean films are better than others, as a whole, the series is one of my most favorite in all of movie history. The movies are genuinely worth watching and they’re overall extremely funny while still involving peril and action all the same. So, let’s take a look at why you should watch Pirates of the Caribbean in 2023:
1. Captain Jack Sparrow is a Great Main Character
Johnny Depp stars as Captain Jack Sparrow, the clever and cunning pirate that can somehow get out of every situation he gets into.
Jack Sparrow–sorry, Captain Jack Sparrow–has been through it all: He’s been mutinied against, stranded on an island, nearly executed, and so much more. But he manages to figure it all out and succeed. Jack looks out pretty much for his own skin the entire time, which leads to some hilarious interactions between him and the other characters.
He’s absolutely one of the most iconic characters ever and he doesn’t get old once. Johnny Depp’s performance as Jack Sparrow is also unmatched. I don’t think any other actor could pull it off, honestly.
2. There’s Plenty of Action
Despite its slightly silly and comedic nature, Pirates of the Caribbean is a very action-packed film. The first movie, The Curse of the Black Pearl, literally follows Jack as he tries to get his ship, The Black Pearl back. Unfortunately for Jack, the Black Pearl is being commanded by Captain Barbossa and his crew of undead pirates.
The movies do include quite a lot of undead pirates, which makes the peril much more intense and much higher.
There’s lots of swordfights, naval combat, and the interactions between the pirates and the British is full of action as well. The British are constantly hunting down pirates to execute them, which leads to a pretty dark sequence at the beginning of Dead Man’s Chest. Doesn’t help that they were singing the eerie song, Hoist the Colors at the same time.
3. The Characters Have Great Chemistry
You know, a lot of movies include characters that don’t seem to work well together at all. That’s not the case with Pirates of the Caribbean at all. Captain Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, and Emma Swann are all hilarious when on-screen together. Even Commodore James Norrington worked out well with the crew, despite being a big antagonist for them. Jack’s main crew is also absolutely hilarious.
The characters all seem to be coherent with each other and you don’t feel like anybody is really out of place in the story. That’s what I really liked about the flow of Pirates of the Caribbean–it works well!
4. The Comedy is Actually Funny!
I know a lot of movies and TV shows nowadays claim to be comedy, but they usually aren’t really good at being comedies. Like…at all.
However, Pirates of the Caribbean was genuinely funny. The jokes made were funny, well-delivered, sometimes subtle, and typically invoked a laugh out of me.
Jack and other characters also often made witty comments, but they weren’t annoying or cringe-inducing like Marvel movies nowadays. They were appropriately made and fit well within the context.
All-in-all, Pirates of the Caribbean was a comedic series that had truly funny comedic elements.
5. It Never Gets Old
I don’t care how old the movies are, they are truly timeless classics. Pirates of the Caribbean understood how to make a story and deliver it as effectively as possible. Sure, some of the films are weaker in the series compared to others, but all of them are great at the end of the day.
If I’m thinking about an ideal movie, I can think of Pirates of the Caribbean. There’s great writing, funny characters, peril, action, adventure, story, and passion behind each movie. So, if I had to pick to watch a movie series over and over, it would be Pirates of the Caribbean.
I just hope we get to see Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow at least one more time.
