Ubisoft has delayed Skull & Bones for the sixth time now since the title was announced. It has also canceled three more unannounced games, citing “major challenges” in the industry. Ubisoft is also working on “restructuring.”
In a press release, Ubisoft outlined its new strategy for the remainder of its fiscal year. It stated that performance was lower than expectations in the last fiscal quarter. Ubisoft said that it is “facing major challenges as the industry continues to shift towards mega-brands and long-lasting titles than [sic] can reach players across the globe, across platforms and business models.”
Ubisoft confirmed that several of its recent launches have underperformed, specifically referencing Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope. The underperformance of the Mario crossover comes despite “an ambitious marketing plan.” Just Dance 2023 also underperformed.
The Fate of Skull & Bones
As a result of the issues, Ubisoft has decided to delay Skull & Bones again, marking this the sixth delay. Ubisoft is also canceling three unannounced projects after canceling four others in 2022.
The current goal for Skull & Bones seems to be “early 2023-2024.” If it is in reference to fiscal years, we may see Skull & Bones in April 2023 or as late as December.
Ubisoft is also deciding to focus on fewer games going forward and it is also looking to restructure in order to reduce costs in the coming year.
Investors seemed worried about the statements and underperformances by Ubisoft. The French video game giant reassured investors that the next fiscal year (begins April 2023) will see the release of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, and “other premium unannounced games, including a large one.” Skull & Bones would likely be included in this, given that it does not receive another delay.
