Redfall, the upcoming vampire shooter from Arkane, was assumed by many to be a Left 4 Dead-style shooter, but with vampires instead. However, in a new interview with GamesRadar, creative director Ricardo Bare and studio director Harvey Smith stated that it’s not really like Left 4 Dead at all.
“It’s totally understandable for somebody to come to that conclusion,” Bare said. “There are four playable characters, you can play together cooperatively, and you’re going against the undead. But, in terms of the way that you play and experience Redfall, it’s not like those games at all. Redfall is more like loading into Far Cry.”
Far Cry is an open-world first-person shooter developed and published by Ubisoft — the French video game giant behind Assassin’s Creed and Rainbow Six Siege. The main features of Far Cry often include intense chaos, an open world, and heavy emphasis on gunplay.
Games like Left 4 Dead often involve linear levels with hordes of enemies, where survival is the only option. However, Redfall will feature an open world and offer both story missions and immersive sim-style exploration, which is not like Left 4 Dead in that aspect.
Bare continued, saying, “You’re in a big-ass open world. We have a home base where you can talk to NPCs and get side quests. You can go to the mission table and pick up story-driven missions. Or you can not give a shit about any of that and just head outside, pick a direction, start hauling ass, and run into the living world stuff that we have going on.”
The open-world will likely not be on the same scale as Far Cry games, but will still make way for a more immersive and packed game world. Additionally, Redfall will not have vehicles, which can make the game more interesting in terms of survival purposes.
“Redfall is an on-foot game — the scale and the pace is a little slowed down in that respect,” Bare explained. “We want you creeping through a cornfield at night in the fog, hearing vampires whisper in the dark. Maybe you’ll spot a farmhouse in the distance and sneak over to it, only to find that it’s full of cultists and a few trapped survivors who you can save. That’s the kind of vibe that Redfall has.”
Smith also added that “Redfall sometimes feels like what you’d get if you blended Arkane creative values with Far Cry 2 or Stalker. That’s the kind of thing that we wanted to do for a long time.”
Redfall currently does not have a release date. Current expectations and rumors seem to point to a release in the first half of 2023, likely in May.
